Chapter Twelve

Tristan collapsed onto the bed then threw an arm over his face.

He couldn’t have kept the grin off his lips if he’d tried. Being with his mate in that way—pleasing him and claiming him—had been the best moment of his life. Far better than he had imagined it would it have been. He was still breathing heavily and covered in sweat and he was happier than ever before. His connection with Joey was strong—their souls uniting, bonding together for life.

Joey was it for him now.

He couldn’t believe how easily Joey had accepted him as his mate.

Tristan had thought it would be much more difficult to explain the situation to Joey and to convince him that they were made for one another, but Joey had practically begged him for the bite that would seal their bond.

He removed his arm from his face then turned his head to look at his new mate. Joey’s skin was flushed and sweat beaded his forehead but he had a smile on his face that Tristan knew he mirrored. Joey was utterly perfect. When he reached down and threaded their fingers together, his breath caught as a tingle of electricity arced between them.

Joey found Tristan’s gaze and held it. “Can I ask you something?”

Tristan nodded. “Sure, you can ask me anything.”

Now that they were bonded there would be no more secrets between them. He knew his brother and Kelan wouldn’t be happy about that but they were going to have to live with it.

They didn’t keep anything from their mates.

And neither would Tristan.

Joey’s gaze was unflinching. “You said earlier you can’t be turned and you were born that way. So, are all your family vampires?”

Tristan frowned as the words registered then he threw his head back into the pillow and let out a loud roar of laughter. When most of the hilarity had subsided he shook his head, a wry grin on his lips.

“Very funny.”

Joey’s eyebrows knitted together and he snatched his hand from Tristan’s then sat up.

“What’s so funny about that?”

Confusion turned to disbelief then Tristan felt cold seep into his bones. “W-what do you mean?” he stuttered. “What are you talking about? I’m not a…a…”

He couldn’t even say the word, it was so ridiculous.

Joey sat up swiftly then swung his legs over the edge of the bed. He bent over then fumbled on the floor for his clothes.

“Whatever,” he ground out. “What, you think that now you’ve fucked me you can go back to lying about what you are? Do you think I’m stupid?”

“No… Of course not. I…”

“Well, think again!” Joey fumed as he pulled his shirt over his head. “I told you, I know.”

Frustration coursed through his veins as Tristan sat up and ran a hand through his bed-tousled hair. He grabbed hold of Joey’s arm and tugged on it until his mate turned and met his gaze.

“I am not lying,” he said with as much conviction as he could muster. “I won’t ever lie to you, I promise, but you’ve got it wrong.
